Recovery Operative
Job Description: A Recovery Operative working
with the C&S Motor Group will be responsible for the recovery of motor
vehicles from within the M25 to destinations across the UK. You will be working
on behalf of the major UK motoring organizations such as the AA, RAC and Green
Flag in addition to acting in a support role to the emergency services,
recovering vehicles involved in accidents and crime. You will drive a 7.
5t Light Recovery Vehicle rescuing broken down or accident damaged vehicles
from the roadside. You will also be responsible for the safety and wellbeing of
the vehicles occupants whilst transporting them to a required destination. Your
job is as much about customer care as it is about driving.
Personal Qualities: Applicants should be reliable,
presentable, be of good character and stable personality. You should be able to
get on with others in a team as well as work alone and under the pressure of
London traffic conditions. A clean driving license is also a requirement.
Training:
Ongoing training and development is important for your success and C&
S offer a full career development plan. Successful applicants will already be
in possession of a C1+E UK driving license and have some experience of driving
within London and the Home Counties.
Your initial training will
last for approximately 5 days. During this time you will be trained by a
qualified instructor and will have obtained the following skills:
- Safe Loading and Unloading of the Slide & Fixed Bed Transporter
Vehicle.
- Theory and practice of heavy winching.

- Customer Care
- Smith®
Advanced Driving
- C&S Internal Policies and Procedures
You will then be issued with your Provisional certificate and will be
able to recover vehicles up to 3.5t from most situations. You will then
progress over the next 12 months to Intermediate and Advanced levels depending
on your abilities during the period.
Once you have passed the
Advanced Recovery stage and have worked with the company for a minimum of 12
months, you then have the option of taking further internal and external
courses that include:
- Lorry Loader lifting Certification
- IPAF Certification
- HGV2 & HGV1 courses &
License
- HGV Recovery Certification
- HAZCHEM &
Serious Incident Training
Hours &
Conditions of Work: Recovery Operatives are required to work
in a roadside environment that can be quite a hostile and dangerous place. We
will teach you how operate in that environment safely and professionally. You
will also spend a considerable amount of time driving to destinations.
Our Smith® Advanced Driving course ensures you are trained to be
one of the safest drivers on the road. Furthermore, our vehicles are equipped
with satellite navigation and tracking systems that eliminate wasted time
whilst lost or searching for destinations.
Recovery Operatives work
in shifts of 4 days on and 2 days off. Start and finish times are dependent
upon which sub-shift you work on. Each shift lasts for a period of 12 hours. <

Pay: Pay is based on a mixture of a
fixed basic and commission earnings per breakdown or incident. Full details are
given during the interview process. An earnings guide, based on
actual figures for 2004 can be found below: Following Completion of Basic
Training:
Recovery Operative £21,550 pa (£414.42 pw)
Recovery Operative £25,709 pa (£494.42 pw) (Team Leader)
HIAB Operative £32,056pa(616.46 pw)
Your ability to earn more is dependent upon you skill level and abilities. Further
information can be given during the interview process.
Career Development: Working with C&S within the Rescue
and Recovery business, you have a number of career options. Recovery Operatives
that have worked for the company for a minimum or 12 months and hold an Advanced Certificate can
apply to become a Team Leader and become responsible for guiding and assisting fellow operatives within your team.
You may wish to apply to work within our training department and become an
IVR qualified recovery trainer or a Smith® Advanced Driving instructor.
Alternatively, you can apply to join the Central Operations team and work within the
Control Centre as a resource coordinator. From here you have the option of moving into management as a
Duty Manager for the entire Rescue and Recovery Operation.
